According to my trusty online dictionary, fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

Does this describe the current state of affairs or what?

Are you feeling fearful? If you are, and it’s likely you may be, is this the state you want to remain in? Are you ready to shift to new thinking that will help you?

I am not afraid.

The reason is because being afraid of something I have no control over gives my control away and makes me feel powerless, helpless and vulnerable.

My goal is to stay healthy.

Note I did not say that my goal is to not catch the virus, nor is my goal to stay away from others.

This is a very important distinction and one that may help you today, and through this very interesting time in history.

If it’s true, and I believe it is, that we get what we focus on, then making certain you are focused to your advantage is key.

Focusing on the virus — on how many have it, how many it’s killed, what has been cancelled and who it’s hurting brings all those things closer to you. They become top of mind; they are fear inducing.

If on the other washed hand, you focus your mind, heart and body on staying healthy, the way you act and interact shifts to protect you.

Here are a couple of things to keep you focused on what you want to feel instead of fear:

  1. Turn off the media. You already know everything you need to know about the virus, and you have no control over any of it. Stop reading and watching the bombardment about it and you’ll find you feel healthier mentally.

  2. Focus on what you can control.

  3. Shift your thinking to something like “I’m healthy and doing all I can to stay that way.”

  4. Be mindful of your words.

  5. Be conscious of your actions. Keep washing those hands!

Know this too shall pass – and it will.

Think, speak and spread only light. We are human, we are creative and industrious and very hardy. We will overcome anything and everything given time. This has been proven over and over through centuries of living and evolving.

When someone I am speaking to wants to focus on all the bad news so prevalent right now, I find when I gently ask them, “Are you healthy?” and “Are you keeping yourself diligent?” they usually reply “yes” and then we can shift to other things that are far more interesting.

My goal is to stay healthy, especially in my mind. What’s your goal?
